Floppy disk is a soft magnetic disk, very thin piece of flexible plastic made of Mylar (a plastic material) coated with magnetic material (iron oxide or barium ferrite). It is called floppy disk because it is flexible and can be bent unlike hard disk. Floppy disks are also called diskette and are removable disk, inserted into the computer system when needed. The floppy disk is kept within a plastic jacket. A metallic shutter protects the media access hole. The disk manipulates the shutter leaving it closed whenever the disk is not in drive. So, the media is completely insulated from the environment and from user’s.
A floppy disk rotates at 360rpm. Its average access time is 150-250ms. Floppy disks are of different sizes: 5.25 inch and 3.5 inch diameter.
3.5 inch floppy disks:
The storing capacity of 3.5 inch high density floppy is 1.44 MB. IT uses 80 tracks per surface, 135 TPI (tracks per inch), 18 sectors per track. 360 rpm and store 512 bytes per sector. Both sides of disk store information.
5.25 inch floppy disks:
The storing capacity of a 5.24 inch floppy disks is 1.2 MB. IT uses 80 tracks per tracks, 15 sector per track, rotating speed 300 rpm, 96TPI and stores 512 bytes per seconds. Both sides of disk store information.
Nowadays floppy disks have been replaced by CDs and DVDs due to the limited space, cost effectiveness, and handling purposes.
